Ind vs Eng 1st Test: Joe Root falls for 218 but England 45 runs short of 600 mark at stumps, Can Kohli’s India stop them?
India vs England Day 2 Live Score – Ben Stokes might have been dismissed in the second session of day two, but skipper Joe Root’s double-ton ensured that England stays on top in the ongoing first Test against India on Saturday here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
At the tea break on day two, England’s score reads 454/4 with Root (209*) and Ollie Pope (24*) still at the crease. Shahbaz Nadeem got the scalp of Stokes, but Root and Pope ensured that the visitors continue to score runs at a brisk pace. The second session saw 99 runs being scored in 28 overs. During the course of this innings, Root also registered the highest score for a player playing in his 100th Test. Root broke the record of former Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq to achieve this feat.
Resuming the second session at 355/3, Stokes and Root added 32 more runs, before Nadeem managed to send Stokes (82) back to the pavilion in the 127th over of the innings. The left-handed batter went for a slog sweep but he only ended up handing a simple catch to Cheteshwar Pujara, who was positioned at the backward square-leg.
Ollie Pope then joined skipper Root in the middle and the duo did not let the momentum drop for England. Both batters ensured that England did not lose any wickets before the tea interval. Pope and Root have extended their fifth-wicket partnership to 67 runs.

16:43: 179th over: England 550-8 ( Leach 6, Bess 28)
Just one run off Ashwin, another no-ball, signalled by that rather nasty alarm.
16:35: 176th over: England 541-8 ( Leach 2, Bess 24) Bess takes advantage of a looser line from Ishant and waves the ball down to the fine-leg boundary. These two are really raising the irritation factor for India.to
16:11: 171st over: England 530-8( Leach 2, Bess 18)
The Somerset duo survives a quieter over from Sundar. Leach should bat higher than Archer, no?
15:59: Ishant to Jofra Archer, out Bowled!!
The off stump is out of the ground this time. This length delivery keeps a tad low but Archer made the mistake of hanging back and completely missed this incoming delivery.
15:55: WICKET! Buttler b Ishant 30
Oh my, a dismissal of nightmares. Buttler leaves one from Ishant that goes on to clip his off stump.
15:50: 169th over: England 521-6 ( Buttler 26, Bess 17)
A Sundar Maiden – the sort of cocktail I fancy, pink, with cherries, in the post-lockdown future.
15:45: 166th over: England 506-6 ( Buttler 22, Bess 7)
Bess looks settled. A great boundary.
15:40: 111th over: England 326-3 (Root 150, Stokes 41)
Stokes misses a sweep at Nadeem and is hit on the pad outside the line of off stump.
15:32: 163rd over: England 495-6 ( Buttler 18, Bess 1)
Ashwin fires through another maiden; Buttler tries to break the narrative with a cover-drive but no joy.
15:18: 158th over: England 485-6 ( Buttler 9, Bess 1)
Nadeem now having the pleasure of bowling at an England slightly under pressure, just a couple of sweeps from Buttler.
15:12: 156th over: England 481-6 ( Buttler 5, Bess 1)
Bess off the mark with an easy single.
15:03: Nadeem to Root, out Lbw!!
Root given out leg-before. This looks out, but he’s gone for the review anyway. It’s not going to save him though.
14:48: 149th over: England 459-4 (Root 213, Pope 24)
It’s the big boy double act as Ashwin rolls in from the other end. A tall man, stocky for a spinner. Pope and Root are watchful on a peach coloured pitch, a gentle wind ruffling Root’s shirt.
14:18: TEA: 451/4
147th over: England 452-4 (Root 208, Pope 23)
Rohit serves up a whoopy-doopy full-toss to end the session and a grinning Joe Root dabs him to long-on. He’s got plenty to grin about.
14:13: 146th over: England 451-4 (Root 206, Pope 22)
England reach 450 – fifty short of Rob’s requirement of 500, 250 short of Joe Root’s dreams of 700. England have scored 96 runs so far this session. A wafty sweep from Root ends the over.
14:00: JOE ROOT DOUBLE HUNDRED!!!
Root dances to Ashwin, swings his bat through the air and ball goes flying over long-on for six! He takes his helmet off, kisses the badge to celebrate his daddy hundred. What an innings! What a man!
13:53: 140th over: England 424-4 (Root 190, Pope 13)
Root plays a pallu-scoop to Sundar for four. Sundar would be going all crazy as to what needs to be done to send the English captain back.
13:28: 133rd over: England 403-4 (Root 177, Pope 6)
Ollie Pope hits a reverse-sweep into the covers off young Washington Sundar.
13:07: 130th over: England 395-4 (Root 172, Pope 4)
Ishant replaces Bumrah, and Root sends his first ball around the corner for another single. His batting today has been one of the finest Test knocks ever.
12:56: 127th over: England 392-4 (Root 169, Pope 4)
Ollie Pope is the new batsman. He gets off the mark with a slightly risky stroke, slicing a cut through the vacant gully area for four.
12:52: Nadeem to Stokes, out Caught by Pujara!!
In the airrr, not timed. man there. Ohhh fumble but Pujara manages to close his legs and clutch it with body and hands. Had he dropped that, Kohli and Nadeem would have made that famous frustrated Pakistani fan gif impression.
10:06: 98th over: England 280-3 (Root 135, Stokes 10)
Ishant replaces Bumrah. Although he did not get any success, he did bowl excellently yesterday, particularly in that spell to Root just post-lunch. Appeal for LBW and the umpire is not interested. It was missing leg stump.
That is another maiden, the third in a row. India are making the visitors work hard to get the scoreboard ticking. We’ve had 17 in 8.3 overs this morning, and that includes a six from Stokes.
10:03: 97th over: England 280-3 (Root 135, Stokes 10)
Ashwin is starting to get some turn to Stokes, who shapes to go after one outside off stump and then aborts the stroke. Another maiden.
9:49: 92nd over: England 269-3 (Root 130, Stokes 4)
Root clips Bumrah off the pads for a single. He has already scored more Test runs in 2021 than he did last year, 555 to 464. Stokes hasn’t scored a run this year, and it almost stays that way for another 48 hours when Bumrah sends down a sizzling yorker from round the wicket.
9:32: Jasprit Bumrah will open the bowling. He has three deliveries remaining in his 19th over, having dismissed Dom Sibley with what turned out to be the last ball of the day.
9:26: Pitch & Conditions:
“The sun is shining. (Played) Much better than how it looked. 263/3 is a sign of how well this surface played. Interestingly post day one, when you look at the rough it is dusty, the soil is loose. The length is perfect for left-armer Nadeem to a left-hand batsman. Some areas are moving. I think it would (break up). This will start turning a little bit more in the post-tea session today,” report Deep Dasgupta and Nick Knight.
9:14: A little pep talk from captain Virat Kohli. We are set for another exciting day.
Rise and shine ☀️
